Over time, heat cycling, hull movement, vibration, and the natural aging of the sponge material cause the seal to compress and lose its effectiveness. Installation tips: Always replace the flange seal any time the toilet is removed from its base — even if the old seal looks intact. Re-compression of a used seal rarely achieves a reliable seal. Clean the floor flange surface of old sealant and debris before setting the new gasket. (Sealant should never be used) Hand-tighten the T-bolts in a cross pattern, then snug down evenly — do not overtighten, as this can crack toilet bases. Need just the sponge-seal without the hardware?
